Late Summits on Broad Peak and GII

Finally, there’s summit news from Broad Peak, but only after a huge effort and rather late in the day (about 4.30 pm, Pakistan time). Niels Jespers’ tracker shows that he is on the summit. Akhbar Syed confirms that Oswald Rodrigo Pereira and Hugo Ayaviri from Bolivia also summited, as well as Anastasia Runova of Russia, Saulius Damulevicius of Lithuania, and Kim Hongbin of Korea.

The home team of Monika Witkowska of Poland reports that she climbed alone throughout the night after her porter had to retreat because of sickness. While details are sketchy — seemingly some problem with her O2 system — she had to turn around shortly before reaching the summit. On the way down, she fell and slid down about 100m but was unharmed. She is safely back in Camp 3.

Meanwhile, Gasherbrum II summiters are on their way to lower camps. Details are expected soon.

According to Akhbar Syed, GII summiters include: (Sirbaz?) Muhammad Khan of Pakistan, Lluis Cortadellas and Gonzalo Fernandez of Spain, Elyse Dalton of the U.S., Piotr Krzyzowski and Radoslaw Wozniak of Poland. Finally, by summiting GII, Naila Kiani has become the first Pakistani woman to climb one of Pakistan’s 8,000’ers.
