Hindu Kush: 6 Rescued, 1 Dead

Six of the seven climbers hit by an avalanche on Melvin Jones Peak (5,800m) in the Hindu Kush have been rescued by helicopter. The Pakistan Air Force made a series of flights from the Karakorum outpost of Skardu to evacuate all the stricken climbers from the mountain.

Four Italians and two Pakistanis were airlifted to Base Camp and then on to a hospital in Gilgit. The body of Pakistani climber Imtiaz remains on the mountain. None of the injuries sustained by the six rescued climbers are thought to be life-threatening.
